Beebe Wolkenhauer

The story of Beebe, a beautiful American Bully. She was seen by many people running up and down on a 3 mile stretch of highway in rural northeast Alabama for weeks near the end of 2022.

Back and forth she ran day after day on this stretch of road....rain or shine, searching.....and searching. People would throw food out to her occasionally, but she was all alone and refused to leave her area of patrol.

Known for her life's work of dog rescue, Bobbie Taylor an 89 yr old woman (at that time), received a phone call from one of the women in the community about this dog and she went and loaded it in her car and brought it back to her house. She put flyers everywhere in the area where the dog was found, nobody responded. And no microchip.

For weeks and weeks, the dog would stand outside away from the shelter she had been provided and stare down the highway toward the direction that she had been found...searching. Standing in the rain, always looking, always waiting. Watching in the direction down the highway from which she had come and crying, never going into the covered area of her run no matter the weather for fear that she would miss seeing who she was waiting for. She was inconsolable. Then one day while Bobbie was at Tractor Supply, a man came up to her and said,

"I know the story behind the dog you took in. She belonged to a Korean war veteran whose wife had died and he had this beautiful dog as his therapy dog because he was all alone. This dog went with him everywhere he went, ate with him, slept with him, was his constant companion. they were absolutely inseparable; every time you saw him driving in his truck, she was at his side. The Korean War veteran died not long ago, and the relatives found him in his bed with his dog curled up next to him. They did not want the dog, so they turned it out and left it on its own." She had been searching for her owner for all that time, the relatives so heartless that they dumped her out and left her to fend for herself.

Bobbie contacted a wonderful rescue group in Killen, Alabama (HASRA) told them the story and gave the photos of this precious dog; and at 3:30 in the morning this 89 year old angel drove the two hour round-trip to bring this precious dog to the rescue where she was loaded with 152 other dogs onto a huge transport van that was departing to be driven over 13 hours up north where they had a chance of being adopted. And quietly in Minnesota waiting there was an older man...a 20 year Army veteran , who had been told the story of this dog and was standing....ready to take her and love her.

Beebe then joined him, his wife and their other rescue dogs where she went on to become his most faithful companion. While Beebe was a people dog and loved everyone she met she still only had eyes for her new dad. She often accompanied him on many errands and big as she was she'd climb up and lay on his lap in the recliner. She loved toys but it was hard to find toys that could stand up to her strength. Her most favorite thing was belly rubs and she'd drop and roll for every visitor in hopes of getting her belly rubbed. While we never knew her true age she was sadly struck with a rare illness and taken away far too soon. But we have great comfort in knowing that someone very special to her was waiting to welcome her home. We will love and miss her always.
