Bonsai Luckow

May 4, 2007 — July 20, 2022

Faribault, MN

Bonsai a.k.a Arfur Bonzarelli was a full shih tzu born somewhere in the metro area and started out life with an elder mom who eventually passed and he ended up in rescue.  We fostered him then adopted him about a week before he turned 9.  He would say he graced us with his presence for a little over 7 years.  He is survived by his human parents Kevin & Amy Luckow of Faribault, two human siblings Kelsey Jones of Minneapolis, MN and Nicholas Luckow of Faribault, MN and 4 fur siblings Haula (Maltese), Millie (Havanese) Yoshi (Shih tzu/Bichon) and Mayzie (Pekingese/Poodle).   He was preceded in death by his Maltese sister Ellie in January of 2020 and his Shorky sister Angel in August 2020.
I'd love to make this all sappy and sweet but the truth is for a dog Bonsai was an asshole.  No bones about it a true asshole.  In fact one if his most commonly known nick names in the home was "Asshole".  Don't get me wrong, he loved his humans and we loved him however he was not a good sibling in the slightest.  Bonsai could often be heard growling from his dog bed as any other dog walked past him from even 10 feet away.  Much to his dismay he was never an only dog.  He was raised with other dogs his entire life.  So his dislike for his own species was always a mystery to us.  He loved to be outside in the fenced yard and if humans walked past he'd never bark but would get excited for any attention they might give him.  However if that human was walking with one of his sworn enemies he'd bark his fool head off.  He had to do other things in true asshole form as well like he couldn't just pee in the yard like the other dogs, he'd always have to aim for the fence gate on the sidewalk or one of moms flower pots or garden statues.  Then he had the issue of having to wear his dreaded belly band whenever mom left the house.  While he was fully potty trained and would always notify us when he had to go, but he would happily pee in the house if we left him home to show us his displeasure at being left with these other dreadfully annoying dogs who never gave up trying to play with him and be his buddy.  So it became the norm to band him before we left to which he would always hang his head in shame once it was on.  True to dog nature he loved his daily aroma therapy of sniffing his siblings unmentionables however they were NEVER allowed to return a sniff.
How we ever fell so in love with such a jerk......well it wasn't that hard when you took into account his outward beauty, his big brown eyes, his soft and always gloriously fluffy tail and most of all his absolute love and loyalty to his humans. He would follow his mom every where and down to the basement to do laundry.  In his older years the steps became too tough for him so he'd always lay at the top and stare down waiting for mom to reappear.  He also couldn't wait for his daddy to get home from work everyday so he could have his own special snuggle and belly rub time on dads lap.  We have a dog door that is open in the warmer weather so the dogs can go in and out of the fenced yard.  I'll never forget the day I was going to run to the store and Bonsai was sitting in the corner of the fence closest to the street and driveway as he watched me leave.  This was not uncommon for him but that day it started raining so I fully expected he would retreat to the house as soon as I left.  While I was gone it really down poured.  I got home and he was still sitting in the corner watching and waiting for me and soaking wet.  My heart was full.  I snapped a picture of him and kept it as an attestation of his faithfulness.  I think of that day every time I see it.  We had years of snuggling, playfulness and companionship....he just had to have those pesky siblings at arms length or more.  I hope you are in the arms of your first loving Mommy who spoiled you all too well and you have all the cheese you could ever want.  He truly lived the blessed life that every dog should have.
